Rosetta Stone created a program, Rosetta Stone Spanish, that is designed to teach beginning to advanced levels of Spanish in order to make you fluent in the language.  Rosetta Stone Spanish is very different to many of the programs that were reviewed in the area of interaction.  Most of the lessons aren’t interactive at all; you just read a lesson that resembles that of a Spanish textbook.  The only interactivity is in the dictation exercises that require that the words you hear be written.  The lessons are pretty comprehensive for beginning lessons, but the activities are inadequate when it comes to practicing and evaluating your progress.

The Rosetta Stone Spanish learning program provides an extremely simple tracking tool that keeps track correct answers that are given during the dictation exercise, but not for any of the lessons.  There are additional resources that are available on the website offered by Braser Soft.

The program is pretty simple to use, mostly because there aren’t many features to contend with.  Some of the buttons that are included aren’t clearly labeled making some trial and error necessary to figure the system out.

The program relies on a very basic textbook like interface that requires that the lessons are read.  While there is an application for testing your listening comprehension and typing the words that are heard, there is nothing in place that allows for pronunciation evaluation.  There is no video, no images, not much of anything.

The Fluenz Spanish learning program is a relative newcomer to the language software market.  Due to the simple interface and the effective teaching method, Fluenz earned an above average rating.  Fluenz takes a different approach than most of the other programs do.  The creators of the program remained focused on delivering a one on one experience with the use of a video tutor to teach each of the lessons.  The program is based on memory retention and uses a series of activities that progress in difficulty that will culminate in a conversation that you can join.

Fluenz include fewer word tools than most of the other program.  The only tool provided is a basic glossary of Spanish words that are common.  

Fluenz is a good product both in content and looks, which made it easy to put it in our #2 spot in our overall product reviews.  The only reason it wasn’t chosen as our top product is that it simply isn’t as effective a learning tool as our number one pick.

Fluenz provides a series of lessons that include video instruction and relevant activities.  You can begin at any level you are comfortable with and move freely though the lessons.  This makes Fluenz ok for people that have some Spanish education or learn at either faster or slower speeds.

The methods used for teaching grammar are useful for beginners.  Rather than teaching Spanish grammar, the program dives directly into conversations and uses the knowledge of English grammar to understand how Spanish works.  While this may sound too simple, we found it to be effective and not too difficult to follow.

This is an area where Fluenz stands above the competitors.  The interface is very easy and simple to navigate.  The lessons are organized in a linear fashion which means you simply let the program guide you.  You also have access to different quizzes and activities that allow you to cusomize your curriculum.

Every button is clearly labeled so there is no guesswork involved.   This program has fewer menus and buttons than other programs that were reviewed.  It was surprising that so much functionality could be fit into such a simple screen interface.  Ease of use is clearly one of the strongest points of the program.

Fluenz uses more video more the other programs we reviewed. This made it possible to  blend instruction from the tutor with phrases and words that display on the screen as she teaches. In the activities, audio, images and quizzes are used to reinforce what you have learned.  The system uses no additional gimmicks or tricks and is straightforward.

Fluenz provides a very simple glossary that includes some of the most commonly used Spanish words that will be learned during the program.  Most of the vocabulary words that are learned are learned directly from the program, making the need for additional word tools unnecessary.

Tell Me More Spanish, by Auralog, is a very good product with some good features.  Even though it is good is easily outshined by programs that have simplified the Spanish learning process.  Tell Me More is similar to the core program of the Complete Spanish Learning Suite by the name of Learn Spanish Now.  Tell Me More takes advantage of text, audio, and video lessons to teach Spanish with a conversational point of view.

One of the strengths of the Tell Me More program is the variety of word recognition activities and word tools that the program provides.  There are lots of different word activities along with multiple ways to provide information about words and their translations.  This method makes the process of learning more like textbook learning than intuitive learning.  Occasionally the video conversations are able to create an environment of immersion learning.

Tell Me More wasn’t ranked higher during our testing because of the lack of a clear progress tracking system and overall difficulty with navigating through the program.

Tell Me More Spanish includes the basics: video, audio, speech recognition, images, and more.  There are many word recognition activities available to choose from that can help you practice what you are learning.  Each of the activities focuses on different skills so you can concentrate your training where it’s need most.  This program has some great lessons on culture intertwined with the video conversations.  The videos are pleasant to watch and feature a Spanish speaker that is visiting relatives in Spain.  The program effectively integrates the video lessons with the word tools, making it easy to learn more about specific words quickly.

This program provides a variety of word tools.  You can use a standard dictionary to help with translation, or you can translate words instantly that have you stuck.  You are able to keep a log of any words that are difficult for you and the program generates a list of these words along with their definitions for you to study.
